Jennifer Hudson to Star in Aretha Franklin Biopic

Jennifer Hudson is attached to play Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic.

The untitled project will focus on the Queen of Soul’s rise to fame during the ’60s, focusing on the iconic singer’s musical transition from gospel to mainstream R&B, as well as her difficult relationships with her controlling father and abusive husband.

Hudson was famously booted off on “American Idol,” only to win a Grammy for her debut album and an Oscar for her supporting role in “Dreamgirls.” The multi-hyphenate also appeared in “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Sex and The City,” “Think Like A Man” and Fox’s “Empire.”

Franklin, of course, is one of the biggest, most iconic singers of the 20th century. She has 18 Grammys, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and countless other awards and accolades to her name. Her sales exceed 75 million records throughout her five-decade career, and she was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
