We finally know when to expect Jennifer Kent’s follow-up to “The Babadook.” IFC has announced that revenge drama “The Nightingale,” which made its world premiere at the 2018 Venice Film Festival, will hit theaters August 2. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Set in 1825 Tasmania, “The Nightingale” follows an Irish convict (Aisling Franciosi, “The Fall”) determined to find and exact vengeance on the British army officer (Sam Claflin, “Me Before You”) who wronged her family. While pursuing her target, she enlists the help of an Aboriginal tracker (Baykali Ganambarr). Kent penned the script.
The film was the sole woman-directed title to screen in Competition at Venice, where it took home the Special Jury Prize. While accepting the honor, Kent emphasized the need for more films made by women. “I would also like to say to all those women out there wanting to make films, please go and do it. We need you,” she said. “The feminine force is the most powerful and healing force on the planet.” The writer-director added, “I’m confident next year and the year after we’ll see more and more women inhabiting this space.”
“The Nightingale” made its North American premiere at Sundance in January.
Kent made her feature directorial debut with 2014’s “The Babadook,” a critically acclaimed horror story about a mother and son. She already has another feature in the works, “Alice + Freda Forever.” Based on a true story, the pic will center on two young woman who fall in love in Memphis, Tennessee in the 1890s.
