Jennifer Lopez may be teaming up with another woman director. The multi-hyphenate collaborated with Lorene Scafaria on 2019’s “Hustlers,” and her upcoming film slate includes Kat Coiro rom-com “Marry Me” and Reed Morano crime drama “The Godmother.” Now Lopez has signed on to topline and produce “The Mother,” a Netflix action pic that Niki Caro is in talks to direct. Deadline broke the news.
Penned by “Lovecraft Country” creator Misha Green with revisions by Oscar-nominated “Straight Outta Compton” screenwriter Andrea Berloff, “The Mother” tells the story of “a deadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.”
“Hustlers” took in over $157 million worldwide and earned Lopez a Golden Globes nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
“I think women have found their voice in a way that they haven’t ever before, and that means female storytellers — and telling our stories in our way, from a women’s point of view,” Lopez has said. “I think ‘Hustlers’ would have been a very different movie had it been directed by a man.”
“Second Act” and “Shades of Blue” are among Lopez’s other recent acting credits.
Caro most recently directed Disney’s live-action “Mulan.” Her other features include “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” “North Country,” and “Whale Rider.”
