Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s third feature documentary has secured distribution. Deadline reports Vertical Entertainment acquired North American rights to “The Great American Lie.” The income inequality doc will hit On Demand and digital platforms October 2.
“The Great American Lie” takes on systemic inequalities through a gender lens. “With America facing widening economic inequality and stagnant social mobility, the documentary explores an inspiring path forward,” the source summarizes.
“America’s obsession with money, power, and individual success above all else has created and perpetuated systems of major inequality. An upside-down hierarchy of values is to blame for the four current crises Americans face: vast economic inequality, racial injustice, climate change, and Covid-19,” said Newsom. “We need renewed economic and social mobility in this country, and I am optimistic that this film can spark a national conversation on how valuing care, compassion, and collaboration can make the American Dream a reality for everyone who calls this great country home.”
Newsom previously examined the underrepresentation of women and modern masculinity’s effect on young men, respectively, with docs “Miss Representation” and “The Mask You Live In.” She founded the gender equality non-profit The Representation Project after receiving an overwhelming positive response to the former film. Newsom won two Emmys for executive producing “The Invisible War,” a doc investigating rape culture in the military. “The Hunting Ground” and “On the Record” are among her other exec producing credits.
