“Rachel Getting Married” writer Jenny Lumet is re-teaming with her “Star Trek: Discovery” collaborator Alex Kurtzman for a new CBS All Access sci-fi show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer has picked up an adaptation of “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” Lumet and Kurtzman will showrun, write, and executive produce.
The series, a revamp of the novel by Walter Tevis and classic 1976 David Bowie film, will center on an alien landing on earth “at a turning point in human evolution, who must confront his own past to determine our future.”
The show will be co-produced by CBS TV Studios and Tandem Productions.
Lumet disclosed that her and Kurtzman’s inspiration for the series started when Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone and changed the nature of communication.”Twelve years later, we’ve never been more connected — or further apart,” she said. “What is the next step? That opens the door for us to talk about what it means to be human in the midst of noise and texts. That deep dive is where Alex and I really breathe.”
Lumet writes for and co-exec produces “Star Trek: Discovery,” which wrapped up its second season this spring. She helped shape the story for Kurtzman’s 2017 genre pic “The Mummy.” Lumet scored a New York Film Critics Circle Award and an Independent Spirit Award nod for penning Anne Hathaway-starrer “Rachel Getting Married.”
