Jessica Chastain Joins the Oscar Race with Gun Control Drama “Miss Sloane”

Jessica Chastain in “A Most Violent Year”

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain is joining this year’s Oscar race. Variety reports that EuropaCorp and FilmNation have decided on “an awards-season release” of December 9 for “Miss Sloane,” an upcoming thriller starring Chastain.

“Miss Sloane” has both a critically-acclaimed actress and a timely plot in its favor: the story centers on Elizabeth Sloane (Chastain), a ruthless, successful lobbyist who jeopardizes her career to pursue stricter and safer gun legislation.

The “Zero Dark Thirty” actress is vocal and progressive when it comes to issues about diversity in Hollywood, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Chastain used the platform of “Miss Sloane” to join Amy Schumer, Beyonce, and Julianne Moore in speaking out in favor of tighter gun policy. As EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert observed, “The film’s subject matter of gun control is an incredibly important issue in today’s world.”

Chastain’s co-stars on the project include Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Beyond the Lights,” “Belle”) and Alison Pill (“The Newsroom”). The film is directed by John Madden (“Shakespeare in Love”).

“Miss Sloane” was acquired by EuropaCorp for a reported $17 million at TIFF last year after a highly competitive auction.

Chastain last appeared on-screen in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”
