Jessica Chastain has just signed on to star in The Zookeeper’s Wife, an adaptation of Diane Ackerman’s novel, that will be directed by Whale Rider director Niki Caro.
With a screenplay penned by Angela Workman, The Zookeeper’s Wife is about the true story of Antonina and Jan Zabinski, keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, who smuggled hundreds of Jews into the zoo and their home after the Nazis overthrew Warsaw. Even though the danger was palpable, Antonina created a community of the people they had rescued alongside the surviving zoo animals.
It’s exciting to see a film that is a powerhouse of female talent from it’s star, director, screenwriter and producers–Kim Zubick and Diane Miller-Levin are amongst the producers on the film.
Chastain is currently in Ireland filming Liv Ulmann’s Miss Julie with Samantha Morton and Colin Farrell.
