Jill Soloway is taking their relationship with Amazon to a whole new level. The “Transparent” creator is set to launch a book imprint with Amazon Publishing, the Los Angeles Times reports. Named after their production company, Topple, the imprint is set to “spotlight the voices of women of color, gender non-conforming, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer writers,” according to a press release from Amazon.
Topple Books will publish both fiction and nonfiction, though no authors have been announced yet. Soloway will serve as editor at large.
“We live in a complicated, messy world where every day we have to proactively re-center our own experiences by challenging privilege,” Soloway said in a statement. “With Topple Books we’re looking for those undeniably compelling essential voices so often not heard. I can’t think of a more perfect collaborator than Amazon Publishing to make our dream of a revolutionary publishing imprint come true.”
“Transparent” is based on Soloway’s experience of their own parent coming out as trans. The acclaimed Amazon series will return for a fifth season, but without the show’s main character, Maura. Star Jeffrey Tambor was fired from the Emmy-winning show after being accused of sexual harassment by multiple women on set. Soloway’s other Amazon series, Kathryn Hahn-starrer “I Love Dick,” was cancelled after one season. In 2017 they extended their overall deal with the company.
In 2005 Soloway released “Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants,” a collection of autobiographical essays. Their TV writing credits include “Six Feet Under” and “United States of Tara,” and they made their feature directorial debut with 2013’s “Afternoon Delight,” a dramedy about a stay-at-home mom who invites a stripper to become her live-in nanny.
