“Transparent” creator Jill Soloway is seizing the reins of “Red Sonja.” They are taking over directing duties of Millennium Film’s long-gestating comic adaptation from Bryan Singer. Variety confirmed the news.
A spin-off of the “Conan the Barbarian” series, “Red Sonja” is a sword and sorcery story about a female warrior. Soloway is penning the script.
For years Singer has been followed by allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct, allegedly preying on young men and boys. He famously went MIA on the set of “Bohemian Rhapsody” before being replaced mid-shoot.
Soloway, who identifies as nonbinary, urged the world to “topple the patriarchy” while accepting the 2016 Emmy for best directing on a comedy series. They fired “Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor from the Amazon series when two employees accused him of inappropriate behavior on set. “Six Feet Under,” “United States of Tara,” and “I Love Dick” are among Soloway’s other TV credits. They made their feature directorial debut with 2013 Kathryn Hahn-starrer “Afternoon Delight,” for which they won the directing award at Sundance. They have been outspoken advocate in the push for greater inclusivity on-screen and behind the scenes.
“Red Sonja” has been in development for over a decade.
