Jodie Foster is going to war. Deadline reports the Oscar winner will topline and direct a remake of “Woman at War,” Iceland’s submission for 2019’s Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. The film centers on Halla, a music teacher who is secretly a renegade environmental activist. As her eco-activism efforts reach an all-time high, she finds out she’s finally been approved to adopt a child.
“It’s nature vs. nurture, so to speak, as the unlikely eco-avenger finds herself questioning her political convictions and destiny even as government agents hunt for her and an orphaned child awaits to fulfill Halla’s dream of motherhood,” the source summarizes. “Halla decides she will commit one final act of sabotage, her boldest mission yet.”
Director Benedikt Erlingsson called “Woman at War” “a feminist fable” that’s missing Hollywood’s trademarks: “No misery, no violence, no death, not even a gun, and no sex.”
“This movie thrilled me beyond words,” Foster said of the original. “I am so excited to helm a new American imagining of this relevant, beautiful, inspiring story. The character of Halla is a warrior for the planet, a strong woman who risks it all to do the right thing. But not without some serious mishaps along the way,” she added. “I can’t wait to play her. I’m always drawn to a bold and quirky mixture of humor and emotion. This one speaks for our time.”
Foster’s version will take place in the American West. The original’s producer, Marianne Slot, has signed on to produce the remake. Foster’s Egg Pictures is also producing.
Foster won Best Actress Oscars for “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Accused.” She’s directed four features: “Little Man Tate,” “Home for the Holidays,” “The Beaver,” and “Money Monster.” Episodes of “Black Mirror” and “Orange Is the New Black” are also among her directing credits. Most recently, she appeared in dystopian drama “Hotel Artemis.”
