Join the Girls Club for a Conversation with “John Lewis: Good Trouble” Director Dawn Porter

Porter

Dawn Porter will sit down with the Girls Club to discuss her latest film, “John Lewis: Good Trouble” on Thursday, July 9, at 4 p.m. EST. The documentary sees the congressman and civil rights leader reflecting on his experiences as a House representative and his influence on progressive politics.

“Bobby Kennedy for President,” “Trapped,” and “Spies of Mississippi” are among Porter’s previous credits. Her work has appeared on national and global platforms including HBO, PBS, Discovery, and Netflix. Her current projects include the documentary “Vernon Jordan: Make It Plain,” which explores Vernon Jordan’s rise from the segregated South to become one of the most influential African American thought leaders in America, and an untitled documentary project about photojournalist Pete Souza, who served as Chief Official White House photographer for President Barack Obama and as an Official White House photographer for Ronald Reagan. She’s also currently directing and executive producing an Apple TV multi-part documentary series with Oprah Winfrey and Prince Harry that focuses on mental illness and well-being.

Using interviews and rare archival footage, “John Lewis: Good Trouble” chronicles Lewis’ 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform, and immigration. Using present-day interviews with Lewis, now 80 years old, Porter explores his childhood experiences, his inspiring family, and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957.

The Girls Club conversation with Porter is open to the public. Remember to register in advance. Event details are below.
