Join the #GoldenRobes Initiative to Recognize Women & Minority Filmmakers

Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” received just two Golden Globe noms

Disappointed by the lack of Golden Globes love for “Ladybird’s” Greta Gerwig, “Wonder Woman,” and “Mudbound”? You’re not alone — and there’s an initiative you can participate in that’ll help our voices be heard. Described as “part award, part Twitter celebration of women and minority filmmakers that have made waves in 2017,” filmmaker Elena Rossini is launching #GoldenRobes.

“To me, 2017 was a hallmark year for women and minorities in film,” Rossini wrote in an email detailing the initiative. She explains, “I thought it could have been the first year with two women nominated for best director [at the Globes]— after all, films like ‘Mudbound,’ ‘Lady Bird,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ and ‘First They Killed My Father’ received phenomenal critical acclaim. And Jordan Peele’s brilliant and haunting ‘Get Out’ was easily the most talked about film of the year (I thought he was the certain winner for best director!). Yet, Greta Gerwig, Patty Jenkins, Jordan Peele, Dee Rees, and Angelina Jolie were all snubbed by the Golden Globes — in favor of [five] white male directors (some have argued on Twitter that Guillermo del Toro is not white, but you get my point).”

Rossini tweeted her displeasure about the snubs, and Marley Morrison, a filmmaker in the UK, replied saying she was having her own awards, calling it the Golden Robes, and Gerwig was going to win everything. “And that’s how the idea for the #GoldenRobes was born,” Rossini writes. “We decided to actually do it!”

If you’d like to get involved in the movement, you can vote for your favorite female or minority director of the year, and support their Thunderclap campaign on Twitter and Facebook. “If we get at least 100 participants by this Sunday January 7th, our message will be blasted out to thousands of supporters… thus making noise on the day of the Golden Globes — and crucially — just when the Academy Awards voting is under way,” Rossini notes.

Find out more about the initiative and how to participate below. Info courtesy of #GoldenRobes.

Our timeline / how you can get involved:

  • Today: you can visit www.goldenrobes.com and (a) cast your vote for your favorite female/minority director (b) support our Thunderclap campaign. All the instructions are on the page and it takes less than a minute to vote.
  • Tomorrow: join us for a Twitter party celebrating women and minority directors. Follow and join the conversation with the hashtag #GoldenRobes. We will have participants across time zones. I plan to be active in the morning / early afternoon US (EST) time. This is actually the day when the Academy Awards nomination process begins!
  • Sunday January 7th: if we get at least 100 Thunderclap supporters by Sunday at 3 PM EST, our message will be blasted out, reaching tens of thousands of people.
  • Monday January 8th: voting for the GoldenRobes will close at 6am EST; the winner will be announced at 10 am EST (and we plan to send the award to that director via their agent!).
