Josephine Decker Is Bringing “The Sky Is Everywhere” to the Big Screen

Decker: Berlinale-Berlin International Film Festival

Josephine Decker’s latest, Elisabeth Moss-starrer “Shirley,” hasn’t received a release date yet, but the director has already lined up her next feature. Apple and A24 are joining forces to bring “The Sky Is Everywhere” to the screen, and Decker is locked in to helm the adaptation of Jandy Nelson’s YA novel. Deadline confirmed the news.

Published in 2010, the book tells the story of a teen mourning the death of her sister and navigating a love triangle involving a new kid at her school and her sister’s former fiancé.

Nelson is penning the script.

Decker’s most recent release is 2018’s “Madeline’s Madeline,” a psychological thriller about a teen who joins a prestigious theater troupe. Her other credits include “Flames,” “Thou Wast Mild and Lovely,” and “Butter on the Latch.” She’s completed filming on “Shirley,” a thriller that sees “Handmaid’s Tale” star Moss playing iconic horror writer Shirley Jackson.

“I’m so grateful that people are taking the blurry boundaries of our industry and working to make those boundaries clear and respected. Our jobs involve an enormous degree of intimacy and exposure and many have used that intimacy in manipulative ways,” Decker told us in an interview last year. “I think we need to look more deeply at this issue’s roots. It’s not just an issue of sexual harassment; it’s an issue of a deeply skewed and ingrained power dynamic between men and women,” she observed. “There is a deep confusion at the root of our culture about when a woman is consenting. I am from Texas, and the enormous societal investment in protecting a man’s ego can often keep a woman from freely expressing her own needs and wants — and from speaking out when those needs and wants are violated.”

Decker continued, “We have to empower all women to know that their needs, wants, and feelings are valid, and that when they feel slighted or betrayed they have the right to share —  and the right to be heard. As Anita Hill herself says, ‘It is time to end the culture of silence.’ Importantly, for men, it is also time to begin the culture of listening.”
