Jude Weng Comedy “Leftover Daughters” in Development at NBC

LWeng: The Movie Times/YouTube

After stints on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “The Good Place,” and “Black-ish,” Jude Weng is getting her own series. Deadline reports that NBC has put “Leftover Daughters,” a comedy from the writer and director, into development.

“Leftover Daughters” follows a “single Chinese-American woman and her circle of unmarried family and friends as they struggle to find love and happiness amidst the pressure of strict cultural traditions.”

Weng is penning the script and will helm the potential pilot, which counts her, Janet Yang (“The Joy Luck Club”), and “Bridesmaids” helmer Paul Feig among its exec producers.

“Finding Ohana,” Wang’s feature debut, launched on Netflix earlier this year. The pic centers on two Brooklyn siblings who spend a summer in a rural Oahu town, an experience that leads them to reconnect with their Hawaiian heritage. Weng’s follow-up, Amazon action-comedy “Shelly,” will star Awkwafina and Karen Gillan as former enemies who reunite when one is hired to assassinate the other.

In 2019 Weng made history as the first Asian-American woman to helm a half-hour broadcast network pilot.
