Judi Dench Releases Funny or Die Video in Ongoing Philomena Ratings Battle (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Hours after Judi Dench and Steve Coogan’s Funny or Die video was released, the MPAA backed down and lowered Philomena’s rating from R to PG-13. Read the original post below.

Philomena co-star Steve Coogan has joined Judi Dench and Harvey Weinstein’s fight for a PG-13 rating for their adoption drama. Two weeks before the film’s release, Dench and Coogan have released a Funny or Die video in which the actors play M and a James Bond-wannabe.

002’s not-so-secret mission? “There’s an upcoming release called Philomena, which they’re planning to rate as an R because it contains two profanities. We want you to go to LA and have a word with them,” Dench intones in her iconic character’s deliciously crisp cadence.

“Would you want me to kill Adam Sandler while I’m there?” Coogan offers. “Why would we want you to kill Adam Sandler?” “Have you seen Jack and Jill?” he gapes.

While Dench and Coogan are doing the soft sell for the public, Weinstein is taking the MPAA to the (proverbial) courts. A spokesperson for The Weinstein Company e-mailed us yesterday to add an update to this story:

The Weinstein Company (TWC) is filing a formal appeal on the MPAA’s decision to hand their upcoming awards contender PHILOMENA an R rating. TWC will be arguing the MPAA’s ratings rule that more than one “harsher, sexually-derived word” used as an expletive automatically garners a film an R rating. TWC is contending that, based on its subject matter and context, PHILOMENA should be granted a more family-friendly PG-13.
