Julia Ormond has nabbed the lead role in”Gold Digger,” a six-part drama for BBC One. Deadline confirmed the news. The Emmy winner will play a woman whose relationship with a much younger man stirs up scandal and suspicion.
Written and created by Marnie Dickens (“Thirteen”), the series follows Julia (Ormond), a mother and wife who has always put others before herself. At the age of 60, she finally decides to follow her own heart. She falls for a man 25 years her junior. “Gold Digger” “looks at how their unconventional relationship impacts her family as the secrets of their past are revealed and investigates whether Benjamin is really the gold digger that they think he is,” according to the source.
Vanessa Caswill (“Little Women”) will helm the first three episodes of the series.
“I’m thrilled to have the hugely talented Julia Ormond bringing our heroine to life,” said Dickens. “I couldn’t be happier to be working with the BBC and Mainstreet on a drama that puts an older woman unequivocally at the heart of the action.”
Ormond added that she’s “extraordinarily grateful” to be cast in this “fabulously written piece exploring family dynamics.” The British actress was last seen in Hettie Macdonald’s miniseries adaptation of “Howards End” which aired on BBC One in Britain and Starz in the U.S. She won an Emmy for her role in “Temple Grandin” and earned a nod for a guest spot on “Mad Men.” “Sabrina,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and “Legends of the Fall” are among her other credits
