The “Little Bee” adaptation is back on. Deadline reports that Julia Roberts has signed on to the project and writer-actress Kathleen Robertson is writing the script. Nicole Kidman and her Blossom Films were originally attached to the film back in 2009.
Written by Chris Cleave, “Little Bee” is about the relationship between two very different women: Little Bee, a young Nigerian refugee, and Sarah, a British editor and mother. The best-seller sees the duo meeting in the Niger Delta under tragic circumstances, and then reconnecting in Britain several years later.
Roberts will produce the film adaptation via her Red Om Films company, as will her producing partners Lisa Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill.
The Oscar winner was most recently seen in uplifting family pic “Wonder.” Her upcoming projects include spy thriller series “Homecoming” and Christmas Eve-set drama “Ben is Back.” Roberts is also attached to star in “Small, Great Things” opposite Viola Davis. The Jodi Picoult adaptation centers on a black nurse who is taken to court by a white supremacist couple when their child dies under the nurse’s care.
“Bates Motel” and “Murder in the First” are among Robertson’s acting credits. She previously wrote crime dramedy “Three Days in Havana.” She’s also been tapped to pen the adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings’ follow up to “The Descendants,” “The Possibilities.” The story centers on a grieving mother who loses her son in an avalanche and forms a friendship with a mysterious young girl.
