Julianne Moore to Star in Nicole Holofcener Movie as Forger

Julianne Moore will likely star in Nicole Holofcener’s follow-up to “Enough Said.”

Moore would play biographer-turned-literary forger Lee Israel in an adaptation of the latter’s 2008 memoir, “Can You Ever Forgive Me.” After penning a few books in the ’70s and ’80s, Israel turned to counterfeiting letters by deceased authors and celebrities to help pay the rent in the early ’90s. When her forgeries started to arouse suspicion among buyers, she turned to stealing actual letters from universities and libraries, replacing them with her counterfeits.

Israel was eventually caught and sentenced to house arrest. Despite the apologetic tone implied by the title of her memoir, she wrote in the book, “I still consider the letters to be my best work.”

Holofcener will write and direct. Anne Carey will produce.
