“Six Feet Under” and “Private Practice” actress Justina Machado will play Penelope, the divorced mother of two at the center of Netflix’s Cuban-American reboot of “One Day at a Time.”
Rita Moreno was previously confirmed to play the grandmother on the intergenerational multi-cam sitcom.
Penelope is described as “a recently divorced former military mother navigating a new single life while raising her radical teenaged daughter and socially adept tween son with the ‘help’ of her old-school Cuban-born mother (played by Moreno) and a friends-without-benefits building manager named Schneider. A former Army medical specialist, Penelope now runs a doctor’s office and dreams of going to medical school.”
Netflix gave a 13-episode direct-to-series order for the reboot. Norman Lear’s original version ran from 1975 to 1984 and starred Bonnie Franklin as the divorced mother holding things together and Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli as her two daughters.
Machado will next be seen in USA Network’s upcoming cartel drama “Queen of the South.”
