“Sibyl” has found a home. Variety reports that Music Box Films acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to Justine Triet’s dark comedy, which was one of just four women-directed titles to screen in Cannes’ Competition section this year.
Co-written by Triet, “Sibyl” follows “the ambiguous relationship between Sibyl, a jaded psychotherapist (Virginie Efira, ‘An Impossible Love’), and her newest patient, Margot (Adèle Exarchopoulos, ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’), a troubled up-and-coming actress,” the source details. “Margot becomes a source of inspiration and obsession for Sibyl, who starts getting more and more involved in the young woman’s tumultuous life.”
“A Russian doll of a film packed with stories within stories, ‘Sibyl’ takes a hard look at the creative process, the unconscious mind, and the ways in which we can both create and destroy our own realities,” said Music Box Films president William Schopf.
“Sibyl” made its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.
“In Bed with Victoria” and “Age of Panic” are among Triet’s other credits. When asked about common denominators in her work, the French filmmaker said, “I’m looking at women trying to hold things together, trying to figure out what their destiny is, and trying to figure themselves out. I’m looking for their little flaws and the ways in which they falter.”
