Karen Gillan & Emily Kapnek Team Up for Disney+ Animated Musical Series “Rhona Who Lives By the River”

Gillan in "Selfie"

“Selfie” fans will have the chance to hear Karen Gillan belt it out again. She’s following up her ass-kicking role in “Gunpowder Milkshake” with animated musical series “Rhona Who Lives By the River,” which will offer the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actress the chance to show off her vocal chops. Deadline broke the news.

Currently in development at Disney+, the project marks a reunion between Gillan and “Selfie” creator Emily Kapnek, who created “Rhona Who Lives By the River” and will serve as showrunner. The series tells the story of Rhona #3 (Gillan), “the third most interesting Rhona in a small Scottish town, whose life is utterly dull. But after a freak clootie well accident results in bacterial pinkeye and the ability to make her own wishes come true, Rhona’s star is finally on the rise!”

Kapnek, whose other credits include “Suburgatory” and “Parks and Recreation,” will serve as an exec producer, as will Gillan.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, described Kapnek and Gillan as “exceptional at creating characters that embody powerful moments of anticipation, humor, and warmth.”

Gillan’s upcoming slate includes “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Dual,” a sci-fi thriller about a woman who decides to clone herself after receiving a terminal diagnosis. She made her feature directorial debut with 2018’s “The Party’s Just Beginning,” a drama about a woman spiraling out of control in the wake of her best friend’s suicide.
