Karyn Kusama’s ‘The Invitation’ Bought by Drafthouse Films

The tastemakers over at Drafthouse Films have acquired Karyn Kusama’s “The Invitation.”

The horror film stars Logan Marshall-Green who attends a dinner party at his old house, now occupied by his ex-wife and her new husband, who becomes paranoid that they are up to something insidious.

In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Kusama said of the script, “This movie made me think about the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s that I love, movies that leave the viewer with more questions than answers. I was interested in the discomfort and dread I felt when I first read [Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi’s] script — those feelings put me in touch with the discomfort and dread I sometimes unwittingly carry around in my daily life. The story is an exploration of those tendrils of emotion and an example of our worst fears blowing up into a nightmare, which felt very cinematic to me.”

“’The Invitation’ has remained under our skin since we first saw it and we’re honored that we’ll be able to share with audiences everywhere,” said Drafthouse COO James Emanuel Shapiro about the deal. “Karyn, Phil and Matt have crafted one of the best mysteries we’ve ever seen.”

“I know I speak for our whole team when I say that we could not be more thrilled to be working with Drafthouse Films for the release of ‘The Invitation.’ Drafthouse is a one-of-a-kind label and an influential arbiter of taste. We love what they do. I’m excited by their passionate enthusiasm for the film and truly honored to be working with them,” commented Kusama.

Funded by Gamechanger Films (dedicated to film with female directors) in association with Lege Artis, “The Invitation” opened the Midnight section of the SXSW Film Festival this year and received positive reviews from critics.
