“Harriet” has grossed over $25 million and Oscar buzz for its leading lady, Cynthia Erivo, since it hit theaters November 1, and now director Kasi Lemmons has more to celebrate. She’s been named as an honoree at the 2019 New York Women in Film and Television’s (NYWIFT) 40th annual NYWIFT Muse Awards. Lemmons, whose other credits include “Eve’s Bayou” and “Black Nativity,” is being recognized with the Nancy Malone Directing Award. A press release announced the news.
Emmy-winning “Handmaid’s Tale” actress Ann Dowd, seven-time Grammy-winning singer Gloria Estefan, and Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud are also being celebrated at the Muse Awards. Jane Rosenthal, co-founder, CEO, and executive chair of Tribeca Enterprises, will be presented with the Career Impact Achievement Award, and “This Close” co-creator and star Shosannah Stern will receive the Loreen Arbus Changemaker Award.
Previous Muse honorees include Julianne Moore, Laura Dern, and America Ferrera.
“The honorees for the 40th Annual NYWIFT Muse Awards bring together an incredibly eclectic and thoughtful body of work that engages audiences of the media and entertainment industry from all sectors. We are thrilled to partner this year with CUNY TV for our first-ever television broadcast of The Muse Awards, to bring this inspirational landmark event to wider New York audiences,” said NYWIFT Executive Director Cynthia Lopez.
The Muse Awards will take place December 10.
