Keira Knightley’s bringing the story of a spy’s heroic efforts to stop an unjust war to the big screen this summer. IFC Films has set a release date for “Official Secrets.” The political thriller opens in select theaters August 23, according to Deadline.
Based on a true story, “Official Secrets” centers on whistle-blower Katharine Gun (Knightley), who leaked top-secret information in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq Invasion. The pic is an adaptation of Marcia and Thomas Mitchell’s 2008 book “The Spy Who Tried to Stop a War: Katharine Gun and the Secret Plot to Sanction the Iraq Invasion,” and depicts the British secret service officer’s decision to make a top-secret memo revealing a joint U.S.-U.K. illegal spying operation against members of the UN Security Council public.
Sara Bernstein (“One Day in Dallas”) co-wrote the film, which made its world premiere at Sundance in January.
“When there are female writers and directors and producers, the parts for women are better, and so the way that society views women through drama is much better and much more well-rounded,” Knightley has said.
“Colette,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” are among Knightley’s recent credits. She’s signed on to star alongside Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehaviour,” a feature based on the events of the 1970 Miss World Pageant, which saw the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement take the stage and interrupt the live broadcast.
Knightley received Oscar nods for her performances in “The Imitation Game” and “Pride & Prejudice.”
