Keira Knightley to Topline Spy Drama Written by Camilla Blackett

Keira Knightley is joining the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Blake Lively, and Daisy Ridley, all of whom are playing spies in upcoming films. Variety reports that the two-time Oscar nominee has signed on to topline and produce an untitled indie spy movie from K Period Media that will almost certainly see her using her brains and brawn to take out enemies.

The plot of the project isn’t known and a director hasn’t been announced yet. TV scribe Camilla Blackett, whose credits include “Fresh Off the Boat,” “New Girl,” and “The Newsroom,” penned the script.

Producers joining Knightley include Bristol Automotive’s Nora Grossman (“The Imitation Game”) and K Period Media’s Kimberly Steward (“Manchester by the Sea”).

“In the workplace, the only issues I’ve had with competitiveness has been from males, and it’s males who don’t like younger women, and often have issues with women who are senior to them,” Blackett has said. “That’s the most mind-boggling thing: having this level of entitlement where they feel they can express that. Like, this is your boss! Whether she has a vagina has nothing to do with it. I’ve had nothing but really supportive women around me, work-wise,” she emphasized. “Working with women, you just get so much shit done. There’s a lack of ego and posturing. All the filibustering you get from other writers in the writers’ room, it’s always men.”

Knightley received Oscar nods for her roles in “The Imitation Game” and “Pride & Prejudice.” Among her upcoming projects is “Colette,” a biopic based on the life of French writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (who used the pen name Colette). In 1948, Colette was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. But she didn’t get recognition for her writing initially — her first husband, Willy Gauthier-Villars, took all the credit. Rumor has it that Gauthier-Villars, a well-known publisher and author, locked his wife up and forced her to write novels under his name.
