Keke Palmer is going back in time. According to Variety, the “Hustlers” actress is set to topline and exec produce “Alice,” a historical thriller from Steel Springs Pictures.
Written and directed by Krystin Ver Linden, “Alice” is “inspired by the true events of a woman of servitude in 1800s Georgia, who escapes the 55-acre confines of her captor to discover the shocking reality that exists beyond the tree line — it’s 1973.”
Principal photography is slated to kick off August in Georgia. “Alice” will mark Linden’s feature directorial debut.
“So many films that depict this time in our history are rooted in victimization of the black female lead,” Palmer said. “This story is the opposite and that’s what attracted me to Krystin’s perspective. It tackles the harsh realities of slavery and white supremacy while also offering inspiration and vindication through the story of Alice’s journey. I don’t want anyone to leave the theater feeling debilitated, I want them to feel empowered.”
Palmer received a Daytime Emmy nod this year for hosting ABC talk show “Strahan, Sara & Keke.” “Star,” “Berlin Station,” and “Scream Queens” are among her acting credits.
“If I’m gonna have something to say, or if I’m gonna be someone that’s looked at, I wanna try my best to uplift other people like me,” Palmer told Harper’s Bazaar earlier this year. “Whether they be Black, whether they be women, whether they be millennials, whether they be the underdog, whatever. If I can be that voice, why not?”
