Kerry Washington is saying goodbye to Shaker Heights and hello to Rockaway Beach. Variety reports that the Emmy-nominated “Little Fires Everywhere” star is set to to topline and produce a film adaptation of “Rockaway,” Diane Cardwell’s 2020 memoir.
Set to be written by “Truth Be Told” creator Nichelle Tramble Spellman, the Netflix pic sees Washington playing a “Manhattan-based journalist who unexpectedly discovers the transcendent power of surfing while on a routine assignment.” She “finds herself running from the comfortable life she’s always known toward a life of romance and self-discovery in eclectic Rockaway Beach,” the source teases.
An eight-time Emmy nominee, Washington scored a statuette in 2020 for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: ‘All in the Family’ and ‘Good Times.'” She exec produced the Outstanding Variety special winner. She’s landed nods for her acting in “Scandal,” “Confirmation,” and most recently, “Little Fires Everywhere,” Hulu’s adaptation of Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel.
Washington’s upcoming slate includes “24-7,” a re-imagined version of “9 to 5” directed by and co-starring Eva Longoria.
