Kerry Washington is set to receive yet another well-deserved award. If you think the “Scandal” actress is badass as Olivia Pope, just wait until you hear what she gets up to when the cameras aren’t rolling. Washington has spoken out against domestic violence, fought to produce “Confirmation,” the HBO Anita Hill biopic she starred in, and made a speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, where she tackled topics such as reproductive rights and equal pay. Now Washington is being honored for mixing her politics with her work. She’ll receive the the Inspiration Award at the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards. “GLSEN — the leading national education organization creating safe and inclusive schools for LGBTQ students — will recognize [Washington for her] dedication in making activism an integral part of her on-screen career,” People reports.
The gala will take place October 20 in Los Angeles.
Jessica Biel, Julia Roberts, and Kate Hudson are among those who have been honored by GLSEN.
“GLSEN shines a light on the importance of safe and supportive schools for LGBTQ students and it’s an honor that they invited me to be a recipient of their Inspiration Award,” Washington said in a statement. She added, “I’m also excited to help celebrate GLSEN’s fearless student leaders who help make a difference in their schools and communities.”
It was recently announced that Washington will be honored with one of The National Women’s History Museum’s Women Making History awards, which celebrate the achievements of women who are pioneers in their fields. The “Django Unchained” actress has received a number of accolades in the past few years, including SAG-AFTRA’s Actors Inspiration Award and the Lucy Award from Women In Film. She’s also been nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards for her work in “Scandal” and “Confirmation.”
