Kimberly Peirce to Receive Artemis Film Fest’s Unsung Heroine Award

Peirce, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Julianne Moore on the set of "Carrie": Artemis

The Artemis Women in Action Film Festival is set to honor Kimberly Peirce. The “Boys Don’t Cry” director will be presented with the Artemis Action Unsung Heroine Award at the fest’s upcoming fifth edition, a press release announced. Artemis — which celebrates female action and empowerment heroes — is recognizing Peirce “for using her unique voice and talent to create stories about people not typically seen in film.”

“Stop-Loss,” “The L Word,” 2013’s remake of “Carrie,” and “I Love Dick” are among Peirce’s directing credits. She’s also an activist, a Governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the head of the AMPAS Diversity Committee, and an Executive Board member of the DGA.

Next Peirce will tell the story of a women-organized underground abortion network with Michelle Williams-starrer “This Is Jane.” The feature is currently in pre-production.

Peirce won’t be Artemis’ only 2019 honoree. The fest is giving its Next Wave Award to “MacGyver” star Levy Tran. Trained in eskrima, Muay Thai, boxing, and Jiu Jitsu, the “Haunting of Hill House” actress came into show business after working as a kindergarten teacher and studying embalming.

Tran’s other credits include “Furious 7,” “Gemini,” and “Shameless.”

This year, the Artemis Women in Action Film Festival will also recognize “NCIS: Los Angeles” actress Daniele Ruah and stuntwomen Jeannie Epper (“Wonder Woman”), Melissa R. Stubbs (“Deadpool”), Shauna Duggins (“GLOW”), Lisa Hoyle (“Snatched”), Mahsa Ahmadi (“Skyfall”), Crystal Michelle (“Captain Marvel”), and Dejay Roestenberg (“Jessica Jones”).

The 2019 Artemis Film Fest will take place April 25-28 in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. Awards will be given out April 25 at the Ahrya Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills.
