Cindy Moon could be getting her own movie. Deadline reports a pic centering on the Marvel character, aka Silk, is in early development at Sony and Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures.
Created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, the Korean-American Cindy is a classmate of Peter Parker/Spider-Man’s who also gets bitten by a radioactive spider. Shooting webs from her fingertips, photographic memory, Silk Sense (a ramped-up version of Spider-Sense), and super speed are among her powers.
“Silk” would be Cindy’s first stand-alone project, but Tiffany Espensen previously portrayed the character in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
“Details [on the project] are being kept under wraps, and Sony is not commenting,” the source notes. No word on whether Espensen will star.
The news of “Silk” coincides with a growing demand for more inclusive blockbusters. As the massive successes of 2o17’s “Wonder Woman” and this year’s “Black Panther” prove, audiences want to see women and people of color taking the lead in superhero films.
“Silk” could also mark a major step forward in terms of Asian-American representation. According to this year’s Diversity Report, Asian-Americans comprised just 3.1 percent of roles in the top films of 2016. Dr. Martha M. Lauzen found that Asian-American women made up only seven percent of all female characters in the top 100 films of 2017.
Pascal’s credits include “The Post, “Molly’s Game,” and the latest “Spider-Man” franchise. “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” out November 9, and the live-action “Barbie” are among her upcoming projects. She’s also producing Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “Silver & Black,” which follows Marvel characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.
Other superheroine flicks on the way include the Anna Boden-co-directed “Captain Marvel” (March 8, 2019), Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman 1984” (November 1, 2019), and Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey.”
