Krista Vernoff Has an Erin Brockovich-Inspired Drama in the Works at ABC

Julia Roberts in "Erin Brockovich"

Erin Brockovich became a household name in 2000 thanks to Julia Roberts’ Oscar-winning portrayal. But Brockovich was changing lives and making history before the film inspired by her life hit the big screen, and has continued to make her mark in the years since the biopic’s release. ABC has made a put pilot commitment to a series based on the activist’s life today, Deadline reports. Titled “Rebel,” the drama hails from “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19” executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff, Davis Entertainment, Sony Pictures TV, and ABC Studios.

Set 20 years after a movie made Annie “Rebel” Rebelsky famous, “Rebel” sees her “still working as a legal consultant without a law degree. A funny, messy, brilliant and fearless real-life superhero who cares desperately about the causes she fights for and the people she loves, when Rebel applies herself to a fight she believes in, she will win at almost any cost,” the source summarizes. Vernoff penned the script.

Vernoff and Brockovich are among the project’s executive producers.

Written by “Unbelievable” showrunner Susannah Grant and inspired by a true story, “Erin Brockovich” tells the story of an unemployed single mother who gets a job as a legal assistant and takes down a California power company accused of polluting a city’s water supply. The actual case was settled for $333 million.

“I was a simple girl born and raised in Kansas, I grew up with a learning disability, I was a single mum and I definitely struggled in a male dominated world. But you need to allow yourself those moments to cry,” Brockovich has said. “I don’t feel the need to defend myself anymore – I am a woman. I feel differently and I think differently than a man. If you’re going to bully me, or laugh at me because something makes me emotional – you go right ahead because that’s what makes me a woman and I don’t want to be anything but that.”
