Kristen Stewart-Led Princess Diana Drama “Spencer” Will Debut at Venice Film Fest

"Spencer"

The People’s Princess is heading to Venice. Variety reports that “Spencer,” a drama inspired by a especially turbulent chapter in Princess Diana’s life, is set to make its world premiere in competition at Venice Film Festival. Kristen Stewart plays the controversial member of the British royal family in the buzzy pic.

“Spencer” is set during a “weekend in the early 1990s when Diana decided to separate from Prince Charles amid rumors of affairs. The late princess was spending the Christmas holiday with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, when she decided to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.”

The film is being released in 2022 to mark the 25th anniversary of Spencer’s death in 1997.

Emma Corrin and Naomi Watts are among the actors who have previously portrayed Princess Di, the former in “The Crown” and the latter in 2013 biopic “Diana.”

Stewart’s more recent credits include “Happiest Season,” “Underwater,” and “Charlie’s Angels.”

Venice Film Festival will take place September 1-11. Jane Campion’s latest film, period drama “The Power of the Dog,” is also making its world premiere in competition at the fest. Jamie Lee Curtis is set to receive the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.
