If you had a dream last night and Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo were in it, we’ve got good news for you: the “Bridesmaids” writers are collaborating on another feature comedy. Deadline reports the duo will pen and star in “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar” for Lionsgate.
The flick is about best friends Barb (Wiig) and Star (Mumolo), who leave their small town for the first time for a vacation in Vista Del Mar, Florida. “They soon find themselves tangled up in adventure, love, and a villain’s evil plot to kill everyone in town,” the source hints.
“It is such an honor that Kristen and Annie have entrusted us with their follow up to ‘Bridesmaids’. Their projects offer a rare combination of big laughs, big heart, and female empowerment that everyone will love — men and women, young and old,” stressed Lionsgate Motion Picture Group prez Nathan Kahane. “Barb and Star are true cultural icons in the making, and as they embark on this hilarious adventure, we are more than thrilled to partner with Kristen, Annie, and Gloria Sanchez on what we know is going to be a great ride.”
Wiig and Mumolo will produce with Gloria Sanchez Productions. A 2020 release date is being planned for the film. Josh Greenbaum (“Becoming Bond”) is directing.
Released in 2011, “Bridesmaids” earned $288.4 million worldwide and nabbed Oscar nominations for writers Wiig and Mumolo and co-star Melissa McCarthy. Wiig toplined the hit comedy and Mumolo made a cameo in the iconic airplane scene.
You can catch Wiig next in Maria Semple adaptation “Where’d You Go, Bernadette,” set to bow August 16. Cate Blanchett stars in the pic about a woman who goes missing. Wiig’s slate also includes “Wonder Woman 1984,” in which she’ll play the villain Cheetah. The Patty Jenkins-helmed sequel is scheduled for a June 5, 2020 opening. “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” “The Last Man on Earth,” and “Mother!” are among her recent credits.
Mumolo co-wrote female-driven war drama “Megan Leavey” and has a story credit on Jennifer Lawrence-starrer “Joy.” Her on-screen work includes “Angie Tribeca,” “Bad Moms,” and “The Boss.”
