Over the past year, Apple has been making its way into producing original content in order to compete with streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. Now, it has just secured its first half-hour scripted comedy, which will star none other than the hilarious Kristen Wiig.
Produced by Reese Witherspoon, Variety reports that this series is based on “You Think It, I’ll Say It,” a forthcoming short story collection by Curtis Sittenfeld. Creator Colleen McGuinness will serve as showrunner, and Lauren Neustadter and Wiig will join Witherspoon as producers. The 10-episode project will mark Wiig’s first regular television gig in six years.
Since leaving “SNL” in 2012, Wiig has involved herself in various films both behind and in front of the camera. In addition to co-writing, co-producing, and starring in “Bridesmaids,” she’s appeared in “Ghostbusters,” “mother!” and “Downsizing,” which is now in theaters. She will star in and produce the American remake of “Toni Erdmann.”
Witherspoon and her female-drive production company, Hello Sunshine, are attached to multiple Apple projects. She will produce and star alongside Jennifer Aniston in Apple’s new morning show drama, and Hello Sunshine will produce “Are you Sleeping,” a crime drama starring Octavia Spencer. Furthermore, Witherspoon will exec produce and star in the second season of HBO’s award-winning series “Big Little Lies.”
