Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan are teaming up and showing off their pipes. Variety confirms that the pair have signed on to star in “Military Wives,” a feature inspired by a BBC factual series following a “choirmaster who selects and trains amateur singers, in this case the wives and girlfriends of soldiers serving abroad.”
A celebration of misfits on a military base coming together, the feature will be helmed by Peter Cattaneo (“The Full Monty”). “As unexpected bonds of friendship flourish, music transforms their lives, helping them to overcome their fears for loved ones in combat,” the source details.
Rachel Tunnard (“Adult Life Skills”) and Rosanne Flynn penned the script.
“The Choir” serves as the inspiration for the film. The series saw the military wives’ choir performing a sold-out performance at the Royal Albert Hall — with the Queen in attendance — in 2011.
Shooting will kick off for “Military Wives” next month in the UK.
Management and production firm 42 is producing, and is backed by Ingenious Media. Worldwide sales will kick off at TIFF, but Lionsgate U.K. has already acquired “Military Wives” for the UK.
“This is the kind of film I love to do; it will make people laugh, and make people cry, touching on the subject of families who are often forgotten,” Scott Thomas said.
Horgan added, “I tried to talk them out of giving me this part because I can’t really sing. But they just said ‘Pierce Brosnan’ and so here I am.” The hilarious “Catastrophe” creator and star is referring to Brosnan’s singing skills — or lack thereof — on display in the “Mamma Mia!” franchise.
Scott Thomas received an Oscar nod in 1997 for “The English Patient.” “Tomb Raider,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Party” are among her recent credits. She’s signed on to make her directorial debut with “The Sea Change,” a drama about a couple in a rocky relationship whose lives are changed when they visit a Greek island.
Horgan, who received an Emmy nod in 2016 for her writing on “Catastrophe,” will also be making her feature directorial debut. She’s helming “The New World” for Focus Features, a story about a husband and wife separated by the former’s death. “Catastrophe” will return to Amazon for its fourth season later this year. Horgan also created series “Divorce” and “Pulling” and co-created “Motherland.” She was last seen on the big screen in this year’s “Game Night.”
