Kristin Scott Thomas Named as President of France’s Cesar Awards

Kristin Scott Thomas will serve as President of the French Academy’s most prestigious event, the Cesar Awards. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news. The British actress is a three-time Cesar nominee herself, scoring nods for her roles in “I’ve Loved You So Long,” “Leaving,” and “Sarah’s Key.” As President, she will most likely open the ceremony, set to take place in Paris on February 22.

As the source writes, the honorary post has been vacant for two years — since Roman Polanski was named to serve in 2017. He eventually stepped down from the role following media blowback and a protest, all of which could have been avoided if the Academy had simply practiced better judgment with their selection.

Best known in the U.S. for her Oscar-nominated role in “The English Patient” and titles such as “Four Weddings and Funeral,” “Mission: Impossible,” and “Darkest Hour,” Scott Thomas also regularly appears in French-language films.

“She is an essential figure of cinema,” said Academy president Alain Terzian. “She has a precision in acting, an excellence in each of her roles, coupled with an irresistible British charm.”

Scott Thomas is set to make her directorial debut with “The Sea Change,” a romantic comedy based on Elizabeth Jane Howard’s 1995 novel of the same name. She’ll also star in the film, which is set in Greece. Her other upcoming acting projects include “Military Wives,” a comedy following amateur singers as they form a choir on a military base, and Alexandra-Therese Keining’s “Paramour,” a thriller about a doomed romance. Both are based on true stories.

Cesar Award nominations will be announced January 23.
