Kyra Sedgwick and Kari Lizer are returning to television. The Emmy-winning star of “The Closer” and the creator of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” are teaming up on ABC comedy pilot “My Village,” Deadline confirms. Sedgwick will topline the project, and Lizer is writing and executive producing.
Hailing from Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios, “My Village” centers on an “empty-nester mom, Jean Raines (Sedgwick), who wonders how she ended up alone while her children live their best lives thousands of miles away. She decides her place is with her family and as she reinserts herself into their lives, her kids realize they might actually need her more than they thought.”
Jean is “earthy, unfiltered, [and] emotional. Born and raised in Iowa, she is practical and can’t be bothered with sugar coating. Very comfortable in her own skin, Jean is not a natural fit in the Los Angeles culture of anti-aging remedies and butt implants,” Deadline describes. “She is a fierce defender of her family and will stop at nothing to protect her connection to them. The sudden loss of her husband has left her a tad neurotic when it comes to worrying about the well-being of the people she loves.”
Sedgwick received an Emmy and another four nominations for her leading role in TNT drama “The Closer,” which she also exec produced. She took home a Golden Globe for her performance as well. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Ten Days in the Valley,” and “The Edge of Seventeen” are among her more recent on-screen credits.
Sedgwick earned a DGA Award nomination for her directorial debut, TV movie “Story of a Girl.” Since then she has helmed episodes of “Grace and Frankie,” “Ray Donovan,” and more. She launched her own production company, Big Swing Productions, in late 2018. Its upcoming slate includes “The Authentics,” a YA series about a first-generation Iranian-American who discovers that she’s adopted. Sedgwick is attached to helm “The Way Between,” a supernatural love story penned by “Frozen’s” Jennifer Lee.
“The New Adventures of Old Christine” ran from 2006-2010 on CBS. Lizer has also written for and produced “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show,” “Maggie Winters,” and “Will & Grace.” She received four Emmy nominations for producing the latter. She made her directorial debut with a 2019 episode of “Man with a Plan.” Also an actress, Lizer has appeared in titles such as “Matlock,” “Empty Nest,” “Will & Grace.”
