Following a roller coaster development ride, “L.A.’s Finest” has been ordered to series. Charter Communications gave a 13-episode straight-to-series order to the “Bad Boys” offshoot, Deadline confirms. The cop series was among the buzziest projects this pilot season, but in a surprising move, NBC ultimately passed on the high profile Sony TV show starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba in May.
“Charter Communications quickly emerged as a likely potential home, starting talks with Sony TV just days later,” the source notes. But the deal just became official.
“L.A.’s Finest” sees Union reprising her role in “Bad Boys 2,” Special Agent Syd Burnett. Last seen taking down a Miami drug cartel, she’s relocated and now working as an LAPD detective. “Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Alba), a working mom with an equally complex past, Burnett is pushed to examine whether her unapologetic lifestyle might be masking a greater personal secret,” the source hints. “These two women don’t agree on much, but they find common ground when it comes to taking on the most dangerous criminals in Los Angeles.”
Union and Alba are among the show’s executive producers. Pam Veasey (“CSI: NY”) will serve as co-showrunner.
Slated to premiere in 2019 on Charter’s Spectrum, “L.A.’s Finest” marks the platform’s first major original series.
“Charter has a strong passion for the project, and we could not be more excited,” said Jeff Frost, President of Sony Pictures TV. “Immediately we knew this innovative new platform was absolutely the right home for L.A.’s Finest.”
Union can be seen in home invasion thriller “Breaking In,” in theaters now. Her other credits include “Being Mary Jane” and “Think Like a Man.”
“Sin City,” “Fantastic Four,” and “Dark Angel” are among Alba’s best known credits.
