“La Madrina: The Savage Life of Lorine Padilla” has been named the 2020 winner of DOC NYC’s Audience Award, which sees audiences casting votes for their favorite feature film. Directed by Raquel Cepeda, the documentary shines a spotlight on the former “First Lady” of the Savage Skulls gang, Lorine Padilla, an outlaw, activist, and spiritual advisor.
“Padilla isn’t only a masterful storyteller, she’s an archetype of the women that have raised me and provided me with safe spaces long before that idea was a thing,” Cepeda told us.
Other top vote getters for the Audience Award this year included Abby Ginzberg’s “Truth to Power: Barbara Lee Speaks For Me,” a portrait of Congresswoman Barbara Lee, and Gilda Sheppard’s “Since I Been Down,” the story of Kimonti Carter, a man serving life without parole in a Washington state prison who is dedicated to transforming inmates’ lives through education.

Originally slated to run from November 11-19, DOC NYC was extended through November 29 due to popular demand.
