Lady Gaga played a pop star in the public eye in “A Star Is Born,” and is following up that Oscar-nominated performance with a story about a woman who’s famous for very different reasons. The actress and singer is attached to star as Patrizia Reggiani in a biopic about the Gucci family, Deadline confirms. Reggiani is the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, and was convicted of coordinating his murder.
The project is based on Sara Gay Forden’s “The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed.” Producer Giannina Scott reportedly “fashioned the [book] into a compelling drama that is framed around the rise of a family business that denigrated into squabbles over control of the business and greed.”
Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of company founder Guccio Gucci, was killed on the steps of his office in 1995. Reggiani served 18 years in prison for planning his murder, and was released in 2016. “Maurizio had two daughters with Patrizia Reggiani, but he left her for another woman,” the source recounts. “She’d had a brain tumor removed, and her children blamed it for her actions; the media took a darker view of her during a sensationalized affair, depicting her as a hot blooded woman scorned and dubbing her Black Widow.” She was originally sentenced to 29 years in prison.
Giannina Scott’s co-producer and husband, Ridley Scott, is set to direct.
Giannina Scott previously produced “Tristan + Isolde,” “Concussion,” and “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House.” Best known as an actress, she has appeared in films such as “Gladiator” and “Prometheus.”
Lady Gaga received a Best Actress nod for “A Star Is Born” at the Oscars this year. She won the Best Original Song prize for co-writing the musical drama’s hit song, “Shallow.” “American Horror Story,” “Machete Kills,” and “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” are among her other acting credits. She’s won nine Grammy Awards for her music, including Best Pop Vocal Album for 2009’s “The Fame Monster.” Lady Gaga is currently working on her sixth album.
