Laura Dern and Issa Rae are taking a real-life “Nightmare Before Christmas” story to the small screen. The respective stars of HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and “Insecure” are teaming up with the premium cable network for “The Dolls,” a limited series that’s currently in development. Inspired by a true story, “the series recounts the aftermath of Christmas Eve riots in two small Arkansas towns in 1983, riots which erupted over Cabbage Patch Dolls,” Variety reports. “The Dolls” will explore “class, race, privilege, and what it takes to be a ‘good mother.'”
Both Dern and Rae are among the project’s executive producers. The latter will serve as a writer alongside “Insecure” scribes Laura Kittrell and Amy Aniobi, who are also credited as co-executive producers. Jayme Lemons of Dern’s Jaywalker Pictures and Deniese Davis of Issa Rae Productions will exec produce as well.
Dern will reprise her Emmy-winning role as Renata on “Big Little Lies'” upcoming second season, every episode of which is directed by Andrea Arnold. The “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” actress also received an Emmy nod this year for HBO movie “The Tale,” a sexual abuse drama inspired by writer-director Jennifer Fox’s own childhood. Her upcoming projects include “Breaking News in Yuba County,” a black comedy that sees her and Allison Janney playing sisters, and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Little Women.”
Rae received an Emmy nod for “Insecure,” and is also credited as co-creator on the comedy. She co-stars in Black Lives Matter-inspired drama “The Hate U Give,” currently in theaters. She is signed on to topline Stella Meghie’s “American Princess,” a romantic comedy about an American living in London.
