Laura Moss to Make Feature Debut with “Frankenstein”-Inspired “After Birth”

"Mary Shelley" tackled "Frankenstein's" origin story.

A retooling of the “Frankenstein” tale is in development, and this version of Mary Shelley’s classic story centers on women. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Fangoria has acquired horror script “After Birth,” and Laura Moss, whose shorts include “Allen Anders: Live at the Comedy Castle – Circa 1987” and “Fry Day,” will make her feature directorial debut with the project.

Penned by Moss and Brendan O’Brien, the pic follows “a morgue technician who successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep the child breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from pregnant women. When the girl’s mother, a nurse, discovers her baby alive, the two women enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return,” the source hints.

Mali Elfman (“Life of the Party”) will produce “After Birth” alongside Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk for Fangoria and Cinestate.

“Frankenstein’s” origin story was explored in “Mary Shelley,” Haifaa Al-Mansour’s recent biopic of the novel’s author. The Elle Fanning-starrer opened earlier this year.
