Variety and Lifetime have joined forces for a special honoring “the brave women serving on the frontlines of the pandemic.” A press release has announced “Lifetime Presents Variety’s Power of Women: Frontline Heroes,” a one-hour special event spotlighting the women healthcare workers, teachers, researchers, and more “who are putting themselves at risk to make a difference and working towards finding a solution in this crisis.” The special will be broadcast on Lifetime and Facebook on Thursday, June 25 at 10 p.m. ET.
Facebook viewers will be able to contribute directly to the United Nations Foundation/World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Fund during the livestream.
Hosted by “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts, “Frontline Heroes” will introduce viewers to women fighting domestic abuse and homelessness, and creating change in education, mental health, and other aspects of our daily lives. Past and present Power of Women honorees will also participate, celebrating “these remarkable women, their extraordinary work, and their dedication to their communities during this incredibly challenging time.”
The press release also announced the 2020 Power of Women honorees, whose “professional achievements and humanitarian efforts” will be recognized during the “Frontline Heroes” special. They are Cate Blanchett, who works with the UN Refugee Agency; Patti LuPone, who supports the HIV/AIDS fundraiser Broadway Cares; and Janelle Monáe, who is involved with community development non-profit Local Initiative Support Corp.
Previous Power of Women honorees Nicole Kidman, Natalie Portman, Helen Mirren, Laverne Cox, Jennifer Garner, Tiffany Haddish, Blake Lively, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Gigi Hadid will salute the women of the pandemic frontlines via self-shot material. Grammy-nominated songstress Andra Day is also set to deliver a special performance.
“During this incredibly trying time, we look forward to celebrating the remarkable women on the frontlines of the pandemic who are making the health and safety of others a priority every single day. In the midst of this crisis, the work they are doing is the epitome of selflessness and bravery,” said Claudia Eller, Editor-In-Chief of Variety. “We are also thrilled to honor yet another inspiring group of women within the industry whose contributions to their respective humanitarian causes are making such a powerful impact on our global community.”
