Abby McEnany and Tim Mason’s pilot, “Work in Progress,” won’t be premiering at Sundance until Tuesday but it’s becoming a series — and a big name has already come aboard. According to Deadline, “Matrix” filmmaker and “Sense8” co-creator Lilly Wachowski has signed on to co-write, co-direct, and produce the project.
Starring McEnany, “Work in Progress” follows Abby, a middle-aged lesbian, as she questions her decisions, love life, and “whether or not to confront the woman responsible for ‘ruining her life’: ‘SNL’s’ Julia Sweeney.” Her journey includes entering into a relationship with a trans man and figuring out her next steps after her therapist drops dead in a middle of a session.
McEnany wrote the pilot with Mason, who directed. The project is based on her one-woman show of the same name. A star of Chicago improv, McEnany’s previous screen credits include “Brown Girl Problems” and “Roomies.” She also wrote and starred in another one-woman show, “They’re Not All Winners.”
Along with her sibling, Lana, Wachowski has written and directed features such as “Bound,” “The Matrix” trilogy, and “Jupiter Ascending.” The Wachowskis created Netflix series “Sense8,” a sci-fi about eight people across the world who can switch in and out of each other’s bodies, and directed several episodes. The show ran for two seasons and ended with a TV movie in summer 2018.
