Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda to Reunite in Netflix Sitcom from Friends Creator

It looks like Netflix learned the right lesson from the gangbuster success of Orange is the New Black Audiences want more stories about women — all different kinds of women.

The subscription service announced today that it would expand their programming with Grace and Frankie, a 13-episode comedy series starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, who last worked together (with Dolly Parton) 34 years ago on the anti-sexual harassment revenge comedy 9 to 5. Grace and Frankie is created by Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman and Sullivan & Son creator Howard J. Morris.

Fonda and Tomlin will play former enemies who turn to one another for comfort when their respective husbands leave them to marry each other.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarnados stated, “Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are among the funniest and most formidable actresses ever and it’s an incredible privilege to give them the opportunity to run riot on Netflix…. The show created for them by Marta and Howard is warm, very funny and anything but wholesome. We can’t wait.”

We can’t, either. Tomlin’s delightful acerbity has been too seldom on screen in recent years, and Fonda has been a MVP on HBO’s The Newsroom in the last couple of seasons.

Maybe they can get Dolly Parton to do a cameo. Grace and Frankie will be released in 2015.
