Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda’s ‘Grace and Frankie’ Renewed for Season 2

Netflix has renewed its septuagenarian sitcom, “Grace and Frankie,” for a second season.

Starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two very different women who turn to each other for comfort when their husbands (Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) divorce them to marry each other, “Grace and Frankie” is created and executive produced by Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris. The series also co-stars Brooklyn Decker and a scene-stealing June Diane Raphael.

In her review of the series, Women and Hollywood TV critic Sara Stewart praised the show’s two leads: “Tomlin and Fonda really are living it up in these roles, getting in some great digs about the invisibility of old age and the cosmic WTF of having your life uprooted at an age when you thought everything was more or less settled. They look terrific, and their comic timing is impeccable.”

Unfortunately, their sparkling performances haven’t been adequately remunerated — a situation the two outspoken actresses went public with earlier this month. Hopefully Netflix will address the pay inequity before the next season, while Kauffman and Morris can work on getting more female directors behind the camera. A whopping 10 of the debut season’s 13 episodes were written or co-written by women, but only three were helmed by women.

The new season will debut in 2016.
