Lily Tomlin is returning to her hometown to collect an honor. The five-time Emmy winner is set to receive Traverse City Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Detroit. Tomlin is following in the footsteps of her “Grace and Frankie” co-star Jane Fonda, who took home the award in 2018. A press release confirmed the news.
Slated to be held July 30-August 4, the fest is celebrating its 15th addition. This year’s theme is “Cinema Saves the World.” Among the films screening is “Lily Tomlin,” a rarely-seen doc that goes behind the scenes of “The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” Tomlin’s Tony Award-winning one woman show.
Fest founder and doc filmmaker Michael Moore will present Tomlin with her honor. The pair will discuss the Oscar nominee’s life, career, activism, and legacy.
“We are thrilled to have Lily Tomlin join us on the 15th anniversary of our festival. As a native Detroiter, she helped to define American comedy in the 20th century,” said Moore. “We are proud to present her with our annual Lifetime Achievement Award.”
“People would always tell me what I could be or I couldn’t be, and I’d say, ‘Who asked you?’” Tomlin recalled during a comedy actress roundtable a few years back. Her best known credits include “Nashville” and “Nine to Five.” “Grandma” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” are among her more recent credits.
Alongside Fonda, Tomlin toplines “Grace and Frankie,” a sitcom about women who have no one to turn to but each other when their husbands reveal they are gay and in love. “Friends” writer-producer Marta Kauffman created the show with Howard J. Morris (“Sullivan & Son”). “Grace and Frankie’s” sixth season is expected to drop in 2020.
