Women and Hollywood spoke with the women behind “The Dressmaker,” a dark comedy starring Kate Winslet as a sophisticated couturier who returns to her middle-of-nowhere hometown to reconcile with her ailing mother (Judy Davis) and clear her name in a murder case.
The film’s co-writer and director, Jocelyn Moorhouse, and producer, Sue Maslin, spoke about the process of getting the film made. Maslin shared how she got Moorhouse back into the director’s chair after 18 years, and why her return to filmmaking is important.
The pair also discussed how male actors have more currency than female actors, and the amazing costumes in “The Dressmaker.”
The Australia-set film premiered at The Toronto International Film Festival in 2015 and went on to become a huge critical and commercial success in Australia when it was released theatrically that October. “The Dressmaker” earned over $14 million at the Australian box office and was nominated for more than 10 awards at the Aussie Oscars.
“The Dressmaker” opens in the U.S. September 23.
