Laura Ingalls Wilder has her sights set far beyond the prairies. Former “Little House on the Prairie” star Melissa Gilbert has announced that she’s running for Congress.
Gilbert will be running as a Democrat in the hopes of unseating Republican Rep. Mike Bishop in Michigan’s 8th district. Her campaign seems to be very much oriented towards families and the working class. Perhaps her time with her (fictional) Ma and Pa and siblings on a farm left a mark on Gilbert. “Please join me in my fight for working families,” she tweeted.
On her website, Gilbert writes, “I’m running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today’s economy. I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.”
This isn’t Gilbert’s first foray into leadership. While she’s never bid for a seat in government, Gilbert did previously serve as SAG President from 2001 to 2005.
