Locarno Film Festival to Open with Ginevra Elkann’s “Magari”

"Magari"

The 2019 Locarno International Film Festival will kick off with Italian filmmaker Ginevra Elkann’s feature directorial debut. Cineuropa confirmed that “Magari” has been chosen as the Switzerland fest’s opening night film.

Set in early ’80s Italy, the comedy centers on three children of divorced parents. “Every child who has divorced parents, which is a lot of children nowadays, feels a disconnect,” Elkann has said. “The difficulty in adapting to the life of their parents … How do you deal with that? And how do your parents deal with that?” Her own parents split when she was three years old.

Elkann co-wrote the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age pic, which is eligible for the fest’s Audience Award, worth CHF 30,000 (about $30,000 USD).

Last year Locarno signed the gender parity pledge. Introduced at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, the pledge is a way to hold fests accountable as they work towards full gender parity, including better transparency into their selection processes, by the year 2020.

This year marks Lili Hinstin’s first as artistic director of Locarno, which is celebrating its 72nd edition. The fest will run from August 7-17.
